Tour #34: Naval Air Station - Jacksonville
|Friday, June 26, 7:30 AM – 11:30 APM||Tour Price: $25|
Just 8 miles south of downtown is NAS JAX, home of the United States Navy’s Maritime Patrol and Helicopter squadrons. Commissioned as NAS Jacksonville in 1940, the base is home to the P3C Orion and P8A Poseidon aircraft on the east coast, and the training command for those squadrons. It is also the home of the sea-based helicopter squadrons and their training command. NAS JAX was the original home of the Navy’s Blue Angels. Your tour guide is a local TCA member, retired Navy veteran, and knowledgeable historian.
We will spend an hour in the Heritage Garden which displays retired examples of each of the aircraft types that have served at NAS JAX. We will walk and talk about each aircraft and its role in Naval Aviation history. We will visit Patrol Squadron 30, the training command for the P3C and P8A aircraft. Operational conditions permitting we will get a static tour of both aircraft.
We then take a short bus ride to the main water towers for the base. These towers are the replacements for the older water tower which was the prototype model for the TCA/Department 56 Convention commemorative piece. The old water tower sported the DEWEY DUCK graphic designed by Walt Disney and given to NAS JAX for their use as their official mascot. We will view the current version of the mascot graphic before leaving the base.
NOTE: All persons visiting this facility must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder. Before boarding the bus you must present a valid Driver's License, Green Card, Federal ID, or Passport. Minor children must be accompanied by a qualified adult, and it is recommended that a copy of each child's birth certificate be available.
