Tour #15: Riverside Avondale Historic Homes
|Tuesday, June 23, 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM||Tour Price: $30|
Riverside and Avondale are Jacksonville neighborhoods with many historic homes, street shops, and tree-lined boulevards. The incredibly diverse architectural treasures were created after the great fire of 1901 that decimated downtown Jacksonville. Soon after, some of the most innovative architects of their time came to Jacksonville to experiment with Mediterranean, Georgian Revival, Tudor, Prairie Style and Bungalow Style homes.
Many of Frank Lloyd Wright’s students came to Jacksonville to practice their skills, resulting in the largest collection of Prairie Style architecture outside of Chicago.
On this tour, you will see a wide variety of beautiful homes, ranging from quaint to ostentatious and everything in between. You will visit the inside of one of the Prairie Style homes that is an active residence and very indicative of the Prairie Style. You will enjoy Riverside and Avondale’s many parks and gardens including a visit to Memorial Park. The beautiful sculpture along the St. John’s River is Florida’s only shrine dedicated to remembering World War I.
